Too cool for school? Well, I know your struggle because I’ve been there myself – trying to pull together a solid band of great musicians who are also nice people might be harder than one would imagine. First of all, not all of your good friends you’d like to hang out with are musicians, and not all of the good musicians you’ll find along the way are easy and fun to work with. So, how to start a band? That is the question we are going to answer today.
Have a Vision
That is like the most important thing you’ll need embarking on any kind of journey. Starting a rock band and potentially becoming famous requires a clear vision of what your goals are. Do you want to become the next Led Zeppelin or being a small local band that gives a gig at your town’s club once in a while? That’s what you need to establish.
Be a Musician
If you are a student trying to become a rock star, but the only thing you know is how to do a college research paper, I have some news for you: first of all, it’s great that you are such a smart kid who puts some effort into making a decent research paper and secondly, you are not going to become a rock star, because did you ever hear about Ozzy Osbourne writing a research paper or any lame stuff like that? I didn’t. Because all he ever did was making amazing music, biting off random bats’ heads, having tons of fun, making millions of dollars, and being just an all-around awesome guy. So, instead of wasting your time, you better stop caring about how to write my research papers, find some (for instance: https://researchpapers.io/write-my-college-research-paper/) and start caring about how to start my awesome rock band. That is what being a rock star is all about: making music and having fun!
Find the Right People
A band is not a band without some people in it, right? Every rock band has a drummer, at least one guitarist, a lead singer, and a bass player. These are quintessential components of every band, so you’ve got to find band before you start your journey. If you look at the history of any successful band, you’ll see that almost all of them change their over the year, and in most cases, these are two or three people who stay in the band from the very start and to the very end of their career. So, do not get discouraged if some people would leave your band at the start of your turbulent journey. Eventually, you will find people whom you’ll be most comfortable playing with.
Name Your Band
That’s one of the most challenging tasks next to making music and writing lyrics. Some collage bands choose names that are too corny, like some kind of Endless Ocean of Pain, or names that sound too indy, like My Evening Avocado Mash, or too death metal, like some Deadly Dead Death. Avoid being too creative, though, because some fellers out there come up with band names that are too grotesque, cheesy, edgy, and plain stupid. What I mean here, is that you need to pick a name that is unique, preferably not longer than three words, and at least somewhat reflective of your band’s nature.
Write Songs
That’s where you’ll know whether your band is capable of putting together any music. Write lyrics, gather your mates in some sound-proof place where nobody’s going to see the mess of your first rehearsal and try to make your first song. It might take quite a while, but in the end, you’ll end up with one of two options: either a couple of songs you’ll be proud to play to a crowd or a complete failure that will put a definitive end to the existence of your band. Either way, you are going to get some of the most valuable experience in your life.
Wrap up
Hear me out, most college bands never get out of their garage, and even more of those disband after a couple of jams. Your task is to be persistent and enjoy the process. Have fun with your mates, maybe get drunk once or twice, be the rock star you want to be, and make some good music. We all need some good music, and I’ll be glad to hear some from you, so go forth and make it happen.
