Past The Fall give us their top five favourite tracks

Towering groove metallers and former Headline Act, Past the Fall kick on their ferocious new single and art video, “Poison Mirror”, on Wednesday 28th February. We checked in with the guys and exclusively asked them to offer up their top five favourite tracks:

Tool – Stinkfist

I when I first heard this it was the first time I’d really listened to tool, and I felt there was something other worldly happening something beyond the usual. The whole track is about the song first, not about being carriages for particular instruments or salient ideas/ egos- the song lives and breathes bigger than the . That showed me the way of making music that spoke to something higher. The lyrics although being literally about anal fisting is a great poke at po faced music whilst still having for me had the heartfelt analogy of a musicians desire to do this as a career even though that’s a bad idea!

Pantera – Five minutes Alone

Another watershed moment of what I though heavy could be- it’s just soooo heavy but it wasn’t fast and had groove groove groove, and the vocals were more hardcore than metal. The riffs are simple but again a masterclass on the power of the band/music first and not the individual ego.

Black Sabbath – Fairies Wear Boots

https://youtu.be/ZXqMkqeFQwA?si=UR3PGQUPbkFAGYHm

A master class of playing intertwining lines in the pocket- the interplay between bass and guitar in a 3 piece just slaps so hard! Super inspiring as a bass player and deeply natural and satisfying to connect to.

Megadeth – Tornado of Souls

Hands down the best setup for a solo ever, the backing is superb and lets Marty Friedman unfurl his wings and do what great solos should do but 99 percent of guitarists fail at – take us on an emotional roller-coaster ride putting your experience first and not the YouTube video finger/scale exercises.

Mastodon – The Motherload

This band does this thing a lot were they write a song most bands would be happy with, but they don’t stop there- they push the vibe further and keep delivering even better and more epic riffs/arrangements the keeping upping the ante till the last moment- total sky music.
