Returning for a third year, StormBreakers hits Bathgate’s Dreadnought Rock to give new bands the chance to play Winter Storm’s main stage and follow in the footsteps of alumni Everyday Heroes. With five bands set to take to the Dreadnought’s stage, and the running order not revealed until the night itself, just like last year, we’re giving you an advance look at who you can expect to perform. It’s always been a great night, full of new discoveries to be made and while only one band can win the top prize, we reckon you’ll be leaving with a handful of new favourite bands.
It’s been a while since we last saw them so we’re looking forward to seeing how Heartbreak Remedy have evolved. But for now, let’s get to know them a bit better!
Heartbreak Remedy
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
Formed in the depths of the Lake District in early 2013, on the back of a drunken night out discussing music and ideas, the motivation for Heartbreak Remedy was ignited.
How long have you been playing together as a band?
Four years on, and having released 3 EPs, Midnight Groove, the band’s debut album was released in May 2015.
Our latest EP, Memento Mori was released on the 14th Feb 2018 and the so far is that Memento Mori is some of the best music the band has written as yet and we are positive of how the songs are being received live.
Steve and Matty have played in bands and different projects together since 2002, so have grown up playing music together. Luke came into the frame after Steve and him had had a few trips to America together and spoke about playing music together. So when we started the band it was only natural for Luke to be a part of it. It always helps when you know you get on with someone.
Where does the name of the band come from?
When the band started, Matty had just gone through a break up and was looking for something to put his energy and newly found spare time into. So it was his Remedy for Heartbreak…see what we did there?
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
Our musical influences between the 3 of us varies across many genres. We have a very eclectic taste in music. But with Heartbreak Remedy our music goes from rock to blues, punk to funk with hints of country thrown in. We don’t have a set sound we write what suits that moment in time, which is often influenced by what we are listening to at the time. We use our influences to create a blend of music, which best suits our heart on your sleeve lyrics, with emotions we all know and are familiar with.
What’s your live show like? How are you hoping to impress the judges?
We don’t take ourselves to serious we are music fans as well as musicians so we are just out there enjoying ourselves. We play a mix of contagious, head banging, foot tapping, hip shaking rock and roll. We’d kinda like to think that due to our different influences it’s music that anyone can listen to and enjoy. We can’t be anything other than us so hopefully they’ll like that.
Have you been to Winter Storm before?
Unfortunately, not. Last year we had a couple of shows the same weekend. It’s often difficult to get to gigs when you’re in a band, you don’t get to half the gigs you want to. Quite a few friends of ours were playing last year so it would have been great to catch up. We played a show during the week with The New Roses and The Brink who were playing the festival, and we just wanted to be able to them up there.
How did you hear about StormBreakers? What prompted you to enter?
With following a lot of what is going on in the music scene, we’d entered to play StormBreakers last year and unfortunately we didn’t get through. It was a great line up last year and it would have been great to be a part of the festival. This year we made it through to battle it out at StormBreakers to compete for a slot at Winter Storm. The line up is great again, so to have the chance to potentially play the event is great. It would be an honour. If we don’t make it through, it’ll still be a great night.
What sort of setlist can we expect?
It’ll just be a high energy set with songs off our 4 records that we have released. Maybe one of our slower songs thrown in there just because it always seems to go down well. But we’ll do what we do.
Other than yourselves, who are you most looking forward to watch perform at StormBreakers?
As music fans we enjoy live music so all bands will be good to see. Steve is originally from the North East and Matty is now living over there so as Twister are locals, so it’ll be good to see them. I’ve actually been trying to catch one of their gigs. Control The Storm’s song “Follow Me” is awesome, right up my street and the video for it is great, it’s got fire in it so I’m sold. Fallen Temples have a great sound and are a three piece like us. I love the simplicity of a 3-piece band but when its tight like that it can stand up against the best.
Brora Wolf’s videos on YouTube sound great. Steve and Matty grew up in a big blues town and got to see some world class blues musicians in their local town so anyone playing blues is onto a winner with us.
What’s been the highlight of the band’s career so far?
Being a part of the Hard Rock Hell event Highway to Hell a couple of years back was great. We came in as runners up and had a great gig at HRH opening up for Hardcore Superstar, and then followed up with a trip to HRH Road Trip in Ibiza on the back of that.
Opening up for some great bands has been a highlight for us too, sharing the bill with the likes of UFO, Magnum, The Paul Raymond Project, Hardcore Superstar, Enuff Znuff, The Quireboys, Kobra And The Lotus, Bullets and Octane and The Last Vegas, amongst others has been great fun.
Releasing our last EP was great too. It was the first we released as a 3 piece and we spent a bit more time recording, editing and mixing it. We made sure we did it properly and the results paid off and we got some great . Playing shows and seeing people singing along is always a highlight, we could never get sick of that!
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
I don’t think we’ve really had anything I’d class as wild happen. I know we have some awesome fans who certainly know how to party and we always enjoy playing for those people and then afterwards them in the crowd with a few beers and lots of good chat…it’s often after the shows that we get to let our hair down and the party…however that’s when we’re not driving… we aren’t all that rock and roll.
What are you working on at the moment/your plans for the rest of the year?
As a band, we are constantly writing and we have enough material for another release and we are making plans to head into the studio to start recording those songs. That’ll be out next year sometime. We have gigs booked to the end of the year and into 2020. What the future brings for Heartbreak Remedy… who knows, but it’s going to be a fun ride!
