#RoadToBOA2021 – Frozen In Shadows

It’s that time of year where we set out to interview as many of the Sophie, New Blood, and Jager bands as we can in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, Bloodstock. Answering our questions here are Frozen In Shadows who play the New Blood Stage on Sunday.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Manchester, UK

How long have you been playing together as a band?

About three years with various line ups, about 18 months with this line up, and we added a keyboard player player late last year.

Where does the name of the band come from?

It’s a play on sleep paralysis and night terrors, which several of us had had at various points in our lives.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

At the moment we’re still honing our sound, writing things that reflect our various (mostly Swedish) influences like At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, Insomnium, In Flames, etc. In of what makes us unique we have five songwriters in the band so we tend to have a lot of variety between tracks, lots of different influences and sounds.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

We put a lot of effort into making sure we’re active and interesting to watch on stage, and our front man Russ definitely brings a lot of energy when the rest of us actually have to concentrate on what we’re playing in the more involved tracks.

Have you been to Bloodstock before?

What did you think? We’ve all been going since we were teenagers and we’re now mostly late 20s, early 30s, so it’s a second home for a lot of us. Some of us have played there with other bands but we’re very excited to bring this project to Bloodstock.

Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?

We just sent in a press back and some material and got offered the slot. We’d definitely recommend this to anyone who either doesn’t want to go down the M2tM route or didn’t win as there’s a lot of talent out there and the organisers are great at picking out bands they think will fit.

Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?

Very excited, wounded, we can’t get extremely wasted on Sunday.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

A good mix of our heavier, riffier stuff and the catchier, more accessible stuff. It’ll be one of our first performances of our latest single “Alone” which we’re excited to finally play live.

Which other bands do you most hope you’re not squished up next to so you can see them play?

We were all jonesing for Dark Tranquillity as they’re a big influence but sadly they’ve pulled out.

What are you working on at the moment?

Lots of material is ready to be recorded and released, lots of shows all over the country and some more festivals to announce.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

I think there was one show we didn’t all turn up incredibly hungover for, that was weird. Never again.

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

That definitely varies by member, but usually just a beer or two to relax before playing. We’re not talented enough to play drunk, sadly. Hopefully we’ll get there one day.
