Road To Bloodstock 2022 – Cast In Tephra

It’s that time of year where we set out to interview as many of the Sophie, New Blood, and Jager bands as we can in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, Bloodstock. Answering our questions here is Shaun from Cast In Tephra who play the New Blood stage on the Saturday.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We come from Newcastle in the North East of England [aka the centre of the universe – biased Mosh]

How long have you been playing together as a band?

I’d say It’s been about 3-4 year at this point now but a few of us have been in bands together over the years going back a decade or so.

Where does the name of the band come from?

It came from finding the meaning of Tephra, it was related to volcanic rock. I started thinking about Pompeii and the cast in tephra refers to that was there fate to be cast in rock for eternity.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Our music combines elements from deathcore slam and black metal to bring heavy and raw experience. I’d like to think our blend of genres and the amount of energy we bring to the music is what helps us to be unique.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

We put a lot of effort into our live show from the stage layout to the atmosphere we set, every moment is ed for and we bring everything we have to our live performance. If i had to sum it up the word that keeps getting said to us after our shows is “intensity”, so i’ll go with that,

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?

Three of us have and it is an amazing experience. The atmosphere is very welcoming and feels like a huge family, not to mention the amount of talent that gets booked across all 4 stages.

Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?

We won the Newcastle region’s M2tM, The crowds were insane for every show and we are honoured to be a part of it.

Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?

Overwhelming! It took weeks to sink in.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

We will be playing our debut EP The Realm of Blissful Ignorance in full, along with a few unreleased tracks slipped in there. It will be hard hitting forms tart to finish

Which other bands do you most hope you’re not squished up next to so you can see them play?

Dimmu, Lorna Shore, Ingested, Malevolence, Boz, Crepitation.

What are you working on at the moment?

Currently we are working through demos for our next release alongside a few other project cogs we have turning.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

The wildest thing we’ve seen recently would probably be the inflatable shark mosh pit when we played alongside Party Cannon. Our friend Ellen of Kilonova was riding the shark while the crowd ran a circle pit. The wildest thing I’ve done recently would probably be jumping off stage with my bass into a mosh pit while playing one of our breakdowns.

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

We’re probably gonna sound quite tame with this answer but 9 times out of 10 were just drinking loads of water before our shows, or occasionally a Jack and Coke!
