Our regular run-down of as many of the Bloodstock bands as we can get to talk to us! DRØWND play the New Blood stage on the Saturday…
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
Ah man, we’re from all over the place, but currently I’m (Joe) based in Northampton, Paul (drummer) is in Southend in Essex, Rich (guitarist) is in Birmingham and Sam (bass, synths) is in Brighton. Pretty well spread.
How long have you been playing together as a band?
The DRØWND project I started up about 4-5 years ago I think, but as a band in the latest and most concrete form has been around twp years I’d guess.
Where does the name of the band come from?
When I wanted to name this project I wanted it to be literally one syllable so it wasn’t hard to or mention to people. DRØWND is an ‘olde’ spelling of of ‘drowned’ – I chose it as it looks good as a logo, sounds kinda sinister and has multiple meanings if you read between the lines depending on what you want it to mean. Very cryptic, eh…?
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
Our music is pretty dynamic – heavy guitars, live drums and bass, but plenty of electronics for added weight and texture as well as whispered, spoken, sung and shouted vocals with and without FX. Definitely a huge, full on live sound.
What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?
The live show is getting more savage each time we play – tight as fuck yet volatile. High energy, destructive and a pretty cathartic performance. Definitely a bit different to the norm, plus we have a specific stage attire, make up and a shit ton of liquid latex among other mad fluids…

Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?
We managed to snag our spot this year by winning the MK region at the Craufurd Arms (blinding venue and crew by the way) tearing through the heats, so we we’re well chuffed we got in through hard work alongside other great bands. Respect to all involved.
Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?
Totally stoked, relieved and glad our hard work paid off.
What sort of setlist can we expect?
A savage tear-arsed set with minimal room for breath.
Which other bands do you most hope you’re not squished up next to so you can see them play?
I really wanna catch Knocked Loose, Skynd and our friends’ bands – Seething Akira and Tribe Of Ghosts. I know Rich and Paul want to see Meshuggah. Plus we all wanna catch as many as the other New Blood / Jäger bands too, to check out some new music and offer .
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m currently working on a new EP which I’m hoping to have release just after BOA and before our next gig the week after. So if we’re lucky to pick up some attention, we’ll have something fresh for people to get their teeth into.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
Jesus, there’s too many things to mention and a lot of which I can’t… I’ll have to keep that cryptic as it’ll worry promotors…!
What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?
Drink wise, whatever is on the rider if we’re lucky to get one in this day and age. I’ll have a couple of steady ones, tactically timed red wines, whisky, tequila and a juicy water for on stage which may or may not be a clear spirit. One thing I’ve learnt without sounding like a bore is not to over cook it pre show. You might think you’re throwing a great show but in reality you’re usually sloppy as shit, plus with all the electronics running, I’ve gotta stay half aware despite the fact I may look hypnotised and on a different planet when we play.
