Road to Bloodstock 2024: Chub

Our regular run-down of as many of the Bloodstock bands as we can get to talk to us! Chub play the New Blood stage on the Saturday…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Brighton and Eastbourne!

How long have you been playing together as a band?

We formed just after the general election in 2019, we were at a New Year’s party and all wanted to shout about how shit the Tories were. We’ve all been friends for 15 years each, Ben and Zakk were childhood best mates. So yeah, first practice was planned for April 2020, but we all know something got in the way of that…

Where does the name of the band come from?

Zakk: We like fish.

Greg: Can’t get enough of padlocks.

Ben: Cause we’re fat.

Kyle: Music gives us a chub.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We’ve been called “metal-infused party punk”, “geezer metal” & “avant-garde punk”… We’re all metalheads who love the energy and message of punk music. For us, the live performance and getting the crowd involved are just as important as the music. It’s a show, not just a gig.

If you like what we do, consider ing us on Patreon for as little as £1 per month!

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

Kyle: We’re here to bring the party and facilitate a good time. If you come expecting a standard punk band you’ll be very surprised – we tread a fine line between tongue in cheek silly fun and heartfelt, political and social messages. Straddling the line between punk and metal, stupid and serious…

Zakk: Free beer bongs.

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?

Zakk: My first was 2014 and I’ve only missed one since.

Greg: I went in 2018 and had such a sick time!

Kyle: I went in 2018 as well and it’s my fave UK festival by a long shot. Still gutted I missed last year, I haven’t seen Meshuggah yet!

Ben: My first Bloodstock was 2021 and I loved it so much I’ve been every year since. And now I’m playing it with my best buds… Still doesn’t feel real! Crazy.

Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?

We’re the proud representatives of Brighton’s M2TM. We were so psyched to get in, still had a great time when we got knocked out in the heats. But then we were asked to return for the semis after we won the popular crowd vote (love you, Brighton!). The crowd went ballistic at both the semis and the finals, and the rest is history…

Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?

Kyle: So overwhelmed!

Greg: Ecstatic! Speechless!

Zakk: Chubbed up.

Ben: Exuburant. Cum.

All: So moist.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

An explosive mix of punk, metal, hard rock… We kinda write whatever we feel like. We like to get the crowd involved, something for people to drink and mosh to. Imagine a soundtrack for a Tony Hawk game that’s not out yet.

Stage times haven’t been announced yet, so which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?

Kyle: Unleash the Archers is our biggest worry overall, been wanting to see them for ages!

Zakk: Redrum!

Greg: Sylosis!

Ben: Been wanting to see Malevolence for a while, and they’re one of our pals fave bands so clashing with them would break their heart!

Kyle: Our buds Crowgod won the Kent M2TM so we’ve gotta worry about them clashing, too!

What are you working on at the moment?

Kyle: So… Much… Work…

Greg: We’ve got four singles and three music videos coming out this year, hoping to crack another two singles out on top of that this year!

Ben: And we’ve got our first mini tour visiting Bristol, Southampton, London and Cambridge in September.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Like we say at our shows, we really want to facilitate a great time, and a safe environment where people can go nuts, but also look out for each other. So it’s a sweaty torrent of energy but it’s real friendly vibes! We’ve had shows where the whole room was moshing for 30 minutes straight, sweat dripping from the walls, beer slick on the floor…

Ben: Last week I saw a guy get up on stage and deliberately piss himself at a Slobheads gig.

Don’t fancy Patreon? Buy us a one-off beverage!

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

Zakk: This portion of the interview is sponsored by Red Stripe, my favourite Scottish Jamaican lager.

Kyle: We’ve taken to dicking around with smelling salts before shows recently… Wait, that’s not a drink. Bucky.

Ben: Buckfast and die young!

Greg: Ain’t nothin’ better than a pint of beer.

Kyle: Blegh.
