Music videos used to be all the rave for many of a certain generation. Everyone used to rush home from school or work, tune into the music channel, and watch the latest videos accompanying the songs that were entering the charts.
These videos would be able to give viewers another perspective – and a potential insight – into the songs and lyrics that were being listened to. They could often feature special effects that made them memorable, while there could also be aspects that were confusing and led to discussions.
Either way, they were extremely entertaining. Those who watched rock music videos would agree, as they would be among the most colourful in of what they displayed.
Although popularity around music videos has perhaps decreased due to the options that people have available to them today, 2023 was still a very big year for artists in the rock space that released videos. There was not a shortage of releases, with some being must-watch!
1. Gossip – Måneskin
Released at the beginning of 2023, Måneskin’s Gossip music video highlighted the Italian rock band’s madness once again in an intense way. Featuring Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine guitarist), the video features the Eurovision 2021 winners in a throwback-style video that requires a bit of viewer discretion. Nonetheless, it is what the old rock scene was all about!
2. Hold Me Like A Grudge – Fall Out Boy
Fall Out Boy aren’t strangers to the rock music video scene, as they have had plenty of successful releases. Therefore, their Hold Me Like A Grudge 2023 video is unsurprisingly must-watch. It is one that is close to their original releases when they first started, which evokes nostalgic emotions for those who loved them when they first hit the heights. It is also clever, as it follows on from the music video for This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race.
3. Lost – Bring Me The Horizon
It is not a music video everyone will enjoy, especially as it has been laden with after effects that can make the toughest of people squeamish. The video begins with Oli Sykes waking up in the middle of brain surgery and without the top of his head. Although gorey, it becomes must-watch because of how much effort has gone into it, as the visual aspects are a joy to hold.
4. Meeting The Master – Greta Van Fleet
Aesthetics have been a huge part of the music video that has been created by Greta Van Fleet for the American rock band’s Meeting The Master track. The main takeaway from the video is the connection of old rock and new rock styles, with an uncommon forest setting being used for a rock video that features women bathing in flowery pools.
5. Caroline – ThxSoMch
Launched in January 2023, ThxSoMch has continued to keep his creepy themes and vibes going throughout his music video for Caroline. The Canadian appears to have developed a certain trademark for himself with the visuals used, with some rather unsettling themes as there is a hole that is being dug before a gun is held up to the woman. There is a lot of editing that has gone into the video, which is why it is an impressive watch.
6. Running Out Of Time – Paramore
Paramore have had huge success over the last couple of decades or so, and their music videos have often been inventful. Running Out Of Time is no different, as Hayley Williams escapes people chasing her by entering a guitar case and finding herself in an Alice in Wonderland-like world. The video provides an added dimension to the song and captures the imagination of those who watch it with various things to talk about.
7. Calm Down – All Time Low
All Time Low’s track Calm Down may not leave rock fans feeling calm when they watch their music video, with there being a number of creepy elements and aspects to contend with. It does combine these serious topics of discussion with lighter entertainment, which is why the video needs to be watched.
Could we see better rock music videos in 2024?
With 2023 having already provided rock fans and music video lovers with some interesting options, could we see even more in 2024? Of course, there is every chance that we could, as new ideas are generated.
Rock stars and bands will be looking to captivate their audiences as much as possible and will want to create must-watch videos that leave a lasting impact. And, with tech getting better with each ing year, who knows what might be capable of producing next!
