In a bid to get through the huge pile of demos and albums I have, I’m going to see how many I can plough through using 100 words or less. First up is Countess’s new album… [these words don’t count!]
Featured as a New Band of the Day back in October, Countess play some of the most accessible black metal I’ve ever come across. They’ve continued this tradition with Ancient Lies and Battle Cries.
Not as heavy as most and with vocals that actually sound like vocals, Countess cram a lot of sounds into the ten tracks. A thrash edge here, doom overtones there. It’s actually quite epic.
The final two tracks get over the range of genres well with “Burn The Throne” being a fast 2:18 and “The Last Temple” an atmospheric 14:49.
Old school doing new school justice.
Ancient Lies and Battle Cries is out now and available on limited edition CD (666 copies, hand numbered) through their bandcamp page for €10 or more.
The album’s full track list:
- Battle Sky
- Call Of The Ancient Pantheon
- By Hammer And Blood
- Vengeance Of The Slain
- Beneath The Eye Of Wisdom
- Confessions Of A Polytheist
- Pray For The Cult
- Cursed Seed Of Aten

- The Last Temple
