Icelandic desert rockers Volcanova ride the tide of doom with debut album Radical Waves.
The short but aptly named instrumental piece “Welcome” almost reminds me of a Type O Negative intro, but even before that thought has fully formed up pops “Where’s The Time”. If there was ever going to be an unofficial COVID-19 anthem this would surely have to be considered a contender.
The 70’s vibe rings through “Super Duper Van” with distortion and cowbells galore alongside a catchy chorus to boot. A slower start sweeps in for “I’m Off” before the tempo ramps to a familiar pace.
Slow, brooding bass lines and gentle solos glide in for what has to be my highlight of the album the largely instrumental track “Stoneman”, followed by “Sushi Sam” which has an accompanying video and shows off the band’s humour. “Mountain” provides the most anthemic offering of the album and even as a non-driver this makes wish I could get behind the wheel and head off down a long road.

Floating in next is “M.O.O.D.” which has a multitude of tempo changes and feels like at least 3 songs entwined, with penultimate offering “Got Game” heavily referencing the album title.
Lastly, “Lights” has a few surprising elements to it which I thoroughly enjoyed and it’s a great track to finish off with. Much like an unpredictable wave, this album hits you from every direction possible.
Radical Waves will be released August 21st via The Sign Records
