Album Review: Infidus – Endless Greed

Creeping out of Oslo are Infidus with their debut album… but not creeping as slowly as this review which is somewhat overdue. However, all publicity is good publicity, yes? Here’s hoping!

Endless Greed is made up of seven rather chunky, heavy tracks. We’re not talking sludge metal, but heading in that direction. Some grimy hard rock riffs which have been left to rust for a bit so they have that nice rough edge. They straddle the rock / metal divide well, with music that’s radio friendly enough without pandering completely to the softer side. In fact, they have a couple of killer riffs, most notably in the album closer “Multiply & Die”. Talk about saving your best for last!

In fact, that’s the odd thing about Endless Greed. Much as it’s enjoyable from the off, the songs do seem to get better as the album progresses. It’s almost as if it was written in order as the band got more into things, and more used to working together. Or maybe they’ve just arranged the tracks to line up with my preferences! Self-titled opener “Infidus” is a bit off-kilter for my liking and seems stitched together, but I know this is a style liked by many. I little prog, a little nu-metal, it still grinds and has a great overall tone.

“Locomotive” (check it below) is more of a hard rocker with a great rhythm, and at this point I felt a bit more at home. By the time the melodies in “Mind Rape” had a chance to float out of my speakers, I was definitely starting to enjoy things more. This is still a song of two identities – the heavy and the clean/trippy – but they seem to blend together more naturally. Once we hit “The Tragedy”, the title track and the excellent “Beyond the Plimsoll Mark”, Infidus are well into their stride.

At a shade over half an hour, this isn’t the longest album I’ve reviewed recently, but it crams a lot into its running time.
