Another independent band we’ve featured before (a single review a couple of years ago) have reared their heads. Hard rock / metalcore combo Against The Sun released Pieces recently and pinged us to give it a listen. The band say it’s an EP, I reckon it’s an album. I mean, six songs (OK, 5 and an alternative version)? Short album rather than long EP!
Pieces comes in strong with the title track. Emo-influenced lyrics with a building sound which showcases what the band are about, “Pieces” isn’t just a good introduction to the album, it’s one of the best songs on here. “Ashes” maintains the formula while “BMM” later on is a much heavier beast, very angry and abrasive.
You can check out “Light” below, minus intro track “I Feel So” which does do some scene-setting. The closing track is an acoustic version of “Ashes” which works really well. Some acoustic renditions are simply the original with a guitar replacement, but Against The Sun have put work in here to very much make this a strong alternative version.
Against The Sun certainly know how to mix it up. While the majority of the album is heavy riffs layered with clean vocals, it’s nice to hear some little breaks such as the funky solo at the end of “Light”, and the more laid-back song “Video Games”.
A decent collection of songs which obviously have a lot of influences behind them. I’d be interested in seeing the band’s music collection to see if I can spot them all!
