Single Review: Grey Moth – “Harmony”

Grey Moth are another new one on us, and got in touch to tell us about their forthcoming album and the release of the second single from it: “Harmony”.

The band describe themselves as well as I ever could:

We’re a two piece alt-doom/metal band from Los Angeles, combining Pallbearer-esque riffs with Neurosis-esque drumming. We share vocals, alternating styles, channeling High on Fire, Darkthrone, Envy, Crass and Hot Water Music. We made the record with Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Amenra, King Woman, Oathbreaker) at Atomic Garden Studios in Oakland. It’s 10 songs, and runs 55 minutes.

So how good a job does “Harmony” do in setting you up for Love & Hatred (out on March 5th, if I’ve deciphered the US system of dates correctly – if not then it’s May 3rd!)?

I’m liking it. It’s mainly a relaxed track with trippy echoing clean guitars and soulful vocals, which occasionally descends into downtuned chaos. Those heavier sections were a bit overly distorted for my liking, though that could be the stream / the laptop I’m working on as my daughter is using my PC for Minecraft.

It’s a very accessible track, and the really heavy bits don’t clash with the melodic main part. They’re flowed into rather than arriving with an uncomfortable crash, and the overall feel is kind of grunge-y. Definitely an interesting combination and well worth a listen.
